The Bare Essentials

When preparing for yoPack of 3 Kushies Wash Cloths or wipesur newborns arrival there are a zillion things that you’ll need to get. Aside from the obvious big-ticket items, like a stroller, a crib and a car seat, first time moms are bombarded with all the other “must have” products, from burp cloths and swaddle blankets to picking out your layette and crib sheets. I myself have spent many a night, waking from a deep sleep in a hot sweat, panicking that I didn’t buy enough onesies or diaper creams, but the truth of the matter is that you could spend a lifetime stocking up on baby products and still never feel like you’ve got it all.

It all can be very oveBaby Sense Burp Cloth (Stone)rwhelming, so in an effort to help all of the new mommies, I’ve compiled a very short list of a few of my favorite “bare” essentials. For just a moment, I want you to forget the humidifiers, specialty teething rings, fancy diaper caddies and the “gotta have it” bouncer of the month. Instead, keep it simple. At the end of the day, all a mom really needs is an endless supply of patience and love, and perhaps a few simple items to aid along the way…

First up, gotta have your burp cloths! I personally love the Baby Sense burp cloths. They are 100% cotton, super absorbent and are perfectly shaped for the shoulder. Bottom line, they do their job and they look fashionable while doing it! They are available in Blue, Pink and Stone. ($14.99)

Cuddlewrap The Bare EssentialsBy now, you’ve all heard of “swaddling”—a true life saver when your baby is crying or fussy. There is also evidence that babies who are swaddled sleep longer and better! My favorite swaddle blanket is the Cuddlewrap by Baby Sense. I’ve tried tons of different brands but the cuddlewrap is the best by far. The design and shape is perfect for a baby, with a shaped neck area cut out so that the arms can be tightly wrapped near to the body and face, providing a very snug fit which your baby will love. Available in blue, pink and stone. ($19.99) http://www.facebook.com/babysense

Natural MatWhen picking out your bedding, have fun with it, go for colors, themes, whatever floats your boat. But when picking your sheets, try to go Organic. It’s safe, natural, great for the environment and great for your baby. My personal favorite brand is Naturalmat. Their products are comfortable, breathable, washable, and non-allergenic. For my daughter, I use the Organic Fitted Cotton Percale Crib Sheet, which is unbleached, undyed as well as machine washable and dryable. I also have the Organic mattress protector, which is key for protecting your crib mattress from those small accidents. The mattress protector is made with two layers of soft organic flannelette and sandwiched in the middle is a thin polyurethane membrane, which is child friendly and breathable. It comes with elastic bands on each corner so it can be attached securely to the mattress. ($38 crib sheet) ($60 mattress protector) http://www.facebook.com/NaturalMatUSA

It sounds silly, but even when it comes to washcloths, there are thousands of different brands to choose from. I love the Kushies washcloths. They are soft, made with a doubly ply so they have the perfect thickness and they also come in great patterns and colors. ($5.99)

Kushies Packaged Layette Wrap Long Sleeve Bodysuit_ ClothingChoosing your baby’s first wardrobe can be both fun as well as daunting. With all the different options out there, it’s hard to know what’s going to be right for your little one. But no matter what, something to keep in mind is that you want the clothes to be super cozy and super soft. One of my favorite articles of clothing for a newborn is the wrap body suits by Kushies. They’re made of 100% ultra soft cotton and a ‘tag less’ design at the neck for ultimate comfort. Most importantly, they feature side snaps, so there’s no need to go over the head (which usually pisses off my baby). This makes changing my baby so much easier? ($17.50) http://www.facebook.com/kushiesbaby

So there’s my list—short and sweet! The consumer market can be a jungle out there so hopefully this will help take a little pressure off of you new mommies… Enjoy!
